NEWARK — From the passenger cabin, nothing seemed amiss.Food and drink service continued normally. The crew had requested help from any doctors on board, but nothing seemed to come of it, passengers said. The eight-hour flight from Brussels landed routinely here about noon Thursday.Unbeknownst to the 247 passengers on Continental Flight 61, the captain, a 60-year-old veteran of the airline, had died over the Atlantic, apparently of natural causes. The co-pilot and a reserve pilot, who was in the cockpit to allow the regular pilots to rest, took over and finished the flight.
HOUSTON (AP) — Continental Airlines said Tuesday it has taken steps to ensure that proper procedures are followed after two unaccompanied girls were placed on wrong Continental Express flights over the weekend.An 8-year-old College Station girl erroneously ended up in Fayetteville, Ark., and a 10-year-old Massachusetts girl was mistakenly sent to Newark, N.J., after boarding planes operated by ExpressJet, which is under contract with Continental.

Frank Poole worked out at a gym and hiked around his Mississippi home carrying a weighted pack for months in preparation for his trip to the Grand Canyon.But it wasn’t long after Poole started hiking on a popular Grand Canyon trail that he was struggling to breathe. Several hours later, he was in a northern Arizona hospital, where doctors determined the 75-year-old Poole had suffered a heart attack.”I never suspected I was having a heart attack,” Poole said recently from his home in Oxford, Miss. “I just thought it was the heat and extra exertion, the altitude and things like that. I was just so naive.”
The USA captain taken hostage by Somali pirates managed to jump off their lifeboat overnight but was recaptured, according to US media reports.The escape attempt by Capt Richard Phillips was witnessed by a US navy ship nearby but happened too fast for it to come to his aid, NBC News says.He was captured after a struggle on his ship, Maersk Alabama. Pirates seized the ship but the crew fought them off.The US navy is bolstering its forces in the area to combat the pirate captors.There are thought to be four pirates with Capt Phillips in the lifeboat, which has reportedly run out of fuel, and it is not yet clear what they are demanding.

An initial list of 60 was cut to 29, led by Chicago.
American Airline’s regional affiliate American Eagle will launch flights from Dallas to six new cities starting Aug. 25.Starting at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, American Eagle will start flights to Santa Fe; Tallahassee; Montgomery; Brownsville; Lake Charles, Louisiana and Manhattan, Kansas.
Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert said the new flights add hope to the Dallas economy in a statement, saying: “Travel is a critical factor in keeping the North Texas economy strong. We are excited about the opportunity to expand destinations from D/FW Airport.”
